Life Coaching – what’s it all about then..

One of the biggest challenges that I face as a coach is overcoming people’s misconceptions about life coaching.

There is an assumption that you need to have a ‘problem’ to see a coach. Not so, at all. While life coaching does focus on self-development and growth, it is NOT therapy or counselling. Neither does it deal with past issues or trauma. Yes, the past may have shaped you but it doesn’t dictate your future. Hence coaching is very much centred on the present and getting you from where you are currently at to where you want to be.

One definition  is that life coaching is a ‘solution focused approach to personal development that aims to bring about lasting change in all areas of life’. It is solution focused because it gives you tools and techniques to come up with your own solutions; after all you are the expert in your life. Personal development to me simply means playing to YOUR best in all facets of life, without comparing to anyone else.

If you can honestly say, hand on heart that you have your shit together in all life areas, Congratulations, you are a rarity!!

The truth is that most of us know that we’re capable of being so much more but we’re creatures of habit. We become accustomed to doing what we have always done while hoping for better. The problem with change is that when we contemplate doing something new; losing weight, starting a new career, relocating, our fears and limiting beliefs are unleashed. This is where coaching comes in.

A personal coach helps you to uncover and overcome those fears and limiting beliefs, enabling you to see the opportunities open to you. Through coaching you will step into your power and learn that you and only you are responsible for your life. Living the life that you truly desire is possible when you recognise that you are the driver rather than the passenger in your life.

Getting to the heart of your values, purpose and limiting behaviours for a truly fulfilling life is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
